What Precision Baskets Actually Do
Standard portafilter baskets use a punched manufacturing process to create the holes water passes through during extraction. Punching leaves holes of slightly varying diameter — some are wider, some narrower, producing uneven flow across the basket surface. Water takes the path of least resistance, so slightly larger holes get more flow, leading to uneven extraction even with a perfect puck.
Precision baskets use laser-cutting or electroforming to create holes of exactly uniform diameter, typically 0.2mm. Water exits evenly across the full basket surface, producing more uniform extraction from the same puck prep. The difference is visible on a bottomless portafilter: stock baskets often show slight asymmetry in extraction patterns; VST and IMS baskets produce cleaner, more centered flow.

18g baskets (designed for 16–18g doses) are the most versatile — they work with 1:2 ratios and most dialing-in approaches. 20g baskets push toward specialty-standard doses and require grinders capable of consistent finer grind at higher doses. 15g baskets are best for single shots. Match basket size to your typical dose: overfilling or underfilling a precision basket negates much of the precision advantage.
Basket diameter must match your portafilter: 58mm for standard commercial machines (Gaggia, Rancilio, ECM, most La Marzocco consumer line), 54mm for Breville machines. IMS makes machine-specific baskets for the most common home machines — check IMS's compatibility list before ordering.
☕ Recommendation
IMS for Breville users and the widest machine compatibility. VST for 58mm machines where you want the original competition-standard precision basket. Either is a meaningful upgrade over any stock basket for under $50.
